Bradley Cooper keeps turning up... and got conned

This is about the third film that i've seen with Bradley Cooper in since we started this challenge, The A-team and Silver Lining Playbooks being the others.

Christian Bale was the most surprising in the cast. It took me a while to realise that it was him, it neither looked nor sounded like him.
Anyways-
American Hustle is a great film about con artists and how the FBI get conned by these guys, because you should never try and use a con artist to con other people. Bradley Cooper is the FBI agent and Christian Bale, Amy Adams and the woman from the Hunger Games and Silver Lining playbooks make up the other main cast.
FBI conduct a covert operation into corrupt congressman and senators... they end up losing 2 million dollars along the way by not being careful, but they do manage to get their target in the end, at the sacrifice of Bradley Cooper not being mentioned when they operation is mentioned to the media.

The other thing to note is the inclusion of Tom Jones' Delilah in the soundtrack!

Vertigo

A woman is possessed and her husband asks a friend of his (who is a retired police detective) to follow her because he thinks that she is possessed and doesn't want to commit her to a hospital until he is sure.
The woman thinks that she is Carlotta Valdes (who died at 26). This woman is also 26 and attempts to kill herself by jumping in to a river. She finally manages to kill herself by throwing herself off of the church tower.
The man then finds another lover and he takes her to the top of the tower so that he can re live the  event and make everything that was wrong right by stopping this woman from jumping. Unfortunately, a nun appears in the shadows because she heard voices on the tower and the woman steps backwards in fear and falls out the window.... so i guess his reliving the event didn't help him much.

I thought it was a great film and again, something totally different to what I expected. It was more like rear window than psycho, which I wasn't expecting, but nonetheless it was a great film and I encourage anyone out there that hasn't seen Hitchcock films to start watching them!

Tron Legacy

We return how ever many years later for a much older Jeff Bridges and the next film in the Tron trilogy.

Flyn has a son, sam who is now old enough to be of a similar age to Flyn in the first film.
Flyn has disappeared and Sam gets a note from Alun that leads him back to one of the original games and... Sam gets sucked into the programme. He finds Clue, the programme that his father created who is ultimately the evil character. He partners up with his father to beat Clue and get back to the user world.

I was dubious over this film, I remember it coming out in the cinema but because the original film was so good, it was hard to think that they might be able to match it with Tron Legacy. They did, I don't know what they'll do with the third film (because I haven't seen it yet) but I hope that it will be as good as the previous film.

All's quiet on the western front

This is the synopsis according to Wikipedia:
The book tells the story of Paul Bäumer, a German soldier who—urged on by his school teacher—joins the German army shortly after the start of World War I. His class was "scattered over the platoons amongst Frisian fishermen, peasants, and labourers." Bäumer arrives at the Western Front with his friends and schoolmates (Tjaden, Müller, Kropp and a number of other characters). There they meet Stanislaus Katczinsky, an older soldier, nicknamed Kat, who becomes Paul's mentor. While fighting at the front, Bäumer and his comrades have to engage in frequent battles and endure the dangerous and often dirty conditions of warfare.
At the very beginning of the book Erich Maria Remarque says "This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped (its) shells, were destroyed by the war." The book does not focus on heroic stories of bravery, but rather gives a view of the conditions in which the soldiers find themselves. The monotony between battles, the constant threat of artillery fire and bombardments, the struggle to find food, the lack of training of young recruits (meaning lower chances of survival), and the overarching role of random chance in the lives and deaths of the soldiers are described in detail.
The battles fought here have no names and seem to have little overall significance, except for the impending possibility of injury or death for Bäumer and his comrades. Only pitifully small pieces of land are gained, about the size of a football field, which are often lost again later. Remarque often refers to the living soldiers as old and dead, emotionally drained and shaken. "We are not youth any longer. We don't want to take the world by storm. We are fleeing from ourselves, from our life. We were eighteen and had begun to love life and the world; and we had to shoot it to pieces."
Paul's visit on leave to his home highlights the cost of the war on his psyche. The town has not changed since he went off to war; however, he finds that he does "not belong here anymore, it is a foreign world." He feels disconnected from most of the townspeople. His father asks him "stupid and distressing" questions about his war experiences, not understanding "that a man cannot talk of such things." An old schoolmaster lectures him about strategy and advancing to Paris, while insisting that Paul and his friends know only their "own little sector" of the war but nothing of the big picture.
Indeed, the only person he remains connected to is his dying mother, with whom he shares a tender, yet restrained relationship. The night before he is to return from leave, he stays up with her, exchanging small expressions of love and concern for each other. He thinks to himself, "Ah! Mother, Mother! How can it be that I must part from you? Here I sit and there you are lying; we have so much to say, and we shall never say it." In the end, he concludes that he "ought never to have come [home] on leave."
Paul feels glad to be reunited with his comrades. Soon after, he volunteers to go on a patrol and kills a man for the first time in hand-to-hand combat. He watches the man die, in pain for hours. He feels remorse and asks forgiveness from the man's corpse. He is devastated and later confesses to Kat and Albert, who try to comfort him and reassure him that it is only part of the war. They are then sent on what Paul calls a "good job." They must guard a village that is being shelled too heavily. The men enjoy themselves but while evacuating the villagers, Paul and Albert are wounded.
They recuperate in a Catholic hospital and Paul returns to active duty.
By now, the war is nearing its end and the German Army is retreating. In despair, Paul watches as his friends fall one by one. It is the death of Kat that eventually makes Paul careless about living. In the final chapter, he comments that peace is coming soon, but he does not see the future as bright and shining with hope. Paul feels that he has no aims left in life and that their generation will be different and misunderstood. When he dies at the end of the novel, the situation report from the frontline states, "All is Quiet on the Western Front," symbolizing the insignificance of one individual's death during the war.

I have to admit that I found this film exceptionally boring, but then I find all war films boring.
If you're really keen on history and especially the war then you have every reason to watch it and i'm sure your history teacher would be very proud of you, but if you don't then there is no real need to watch it, except to understand the reference that people make about things being quiet on the western front.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

I'm a fan of Chow Yun-Fat. I loved him in Bulletproof Monk and also in Pirates of the Caribbean. Needless to say that I loved him in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

I have to admit that I thought all the flying scenes were a little trippy and slightly unrealistic but nonetheless I liked it a lot.

plot from IMDB:
Li Mu Bai, a great warrior decides to turn in his sword, the Green Destiny to a treasured friend. When the sword is then stolen, it is up to him to retrieve it. At the same time he is trying to avenge his master's death by the evil Jade Fox. He is joined in his quest by Shu Lien, the un-conceded love of his life. During all of this, they are introduced to Jiao Long Yu, the mysterious and beautiful daughter of a well known family. She is the mysterious link to all these tales. But through all the many subplots, this is in essence, a love story.

She is the daughter of the Governor and quite an interesting character as the plot develops. This isn't just a martial arts film, as said in the synopsis it is a love story.

I loved the scenery and the simplicity in it. Sometimes films get too carried away by either the many subplots or the martial arts and forget the rest of the story. If we just wanted to watch great martial arts we'd sit down and have a Bruce Lee marathon.

The scenery is really great as well. Showing all about China and it's beautiful scenery.

Made in 2000, a film that looks like it didn't have a massive budget and still managed to produce a fairly awesome film from it. Sometimes simplicity is the best, film in a location that shows beauty and only use the typical things associated with that culture. No helicopter chases or boat chases, nothing that really suggests that an unbelievable amount of money was spent on this film.

Black Swan

This is a film that I was not mentally old enough to watch. It's questionable whether anyone is old enough to watch it!

I found it really weird. I know that it's supposed to be, but I just found it weird from start to finish.
An interesting take on swan lake, it did win an oscar (i think?) and it is some very good acting once again from Natalie Portman.
If you're not sure that you want to watch it- don't watch it and if you do want to watch it... be prepared!

Jailhouse Rock

we're used to seeing Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra (to name a few) starring in the musicals of old time. This one is even older. Elvis Presley stars in this black and white movie as a country singer. Well a guy who gets stuck in prison for a year for manslaughter, shares a cell with a former country singer and is taught to play the guitar and how to sing (not that he needed it). He develops a plan to become a singer and finds, like Joaquin Phoenix did in walk the line that it's easier said than done.

Feeling is essential in singing and he learns about it and then of course, someone pinches his arrangement and makes it famous. One thing leads to another and he finds a way to become famous, forgetting all about everyone that got him there and thinking only about the money.

It's ok. I like the music in it but i'm not so convinced on the acting and the plot line. I don't think Elvis really made a good actor. This is just my opinion. Feel free to watch it and disagree with it.

Dirty Harry

Clint Eastwood stars in the film that seems fairly predictable.
A guy called Scorpio kills a woman and then demands a lot of money to stop killing people. Harry (Eastwood) is a police inspector in charge of this case. He doesn't seem to comply with the rules mutch and after getting vey injured by Scorpio he is taken off duty but still managed to catch the guy and kill him.

Its a good film and fairly enjoyable, but if you've seen one Eastwood film then you've seen them all. Of course he has his one phrase that he's mastered and manages to pull off to perfection every time he uses it.

I know it's a short post- if you wanted to know all about the film you'd watch it. It's worth seeing but not essential!

Esther- let us go and fly a kite!

This one has come closer than was intended but one should not pass the opportunity to watch Saving Mr Banks.

A background into the life of the writer of Mary Poppins. How the book becomes a film and how a very stubborn woman manages to have her mind changed by Walt Disney.

Played by Emma Thompson, P. Traverse absolutely hates cartoons and most musicals. She has been refusing to allow Disney to make a film of it for about 20 years and now she has finally agreed. When she starts she tells them that they are doing everything wrong. She doesn't want Dick Van Dyke to play Burt and she states clearly that the film is not about saving the children, it's about saving the father. They re-write the ending so that Mr Banks fixes the kite and they all go off and fly a kite.

Most of the characters are based on someone from her childhood. Mary Poppins is based on the aunt that her father doesn't like. Her father, Traverse Goff, (Colin Farrell) likes to escape to the fantasy world, creating all kinds of stories and adventures. He actually works in a bank and drinks a lot. He's very close to getting fired but has a chance to clean up for the sake of his daughters.

Can't say anything more, it's spoiling the film, but it is a great film!

You drink the gin...

So while you were watching Channing Tatum grow up... I went back a few decades to Jackie Brown.
A Tarantino film as always... meaning lots of shooting and Samuel L Jackson. Correct me if i'm wrong but I think he has been in every Tarantino film except for Kill Bill 1 and 2?

I wonder what you would do if you had to deal with a really annoying blonde that is absolutely useless?
I'm not saying that we should adopt the Tarantino method of shoot first and ask questions later, but she was completely useless and fairly annoying. Infact, why Samuel L Jackson would even keep her around is way beyond me. I've been sitting here, watching it, for two and a half hours and like all Tarantino films the plot is easy to remember. Air hostess gets caught smuggling money and a small amount of cocaine and suddenly has to play against the cops and her boss who would rather kill her than look at her.
The answer is, keep screwing over the boss to keep the police happy and then in the end, screw them both over and make off with a million dollars. She does have a bit of help, but most of the trickery and schemes are down to her.

Chris Tucker gets shot early on by Samuel L Jackson, which is a massive bonus because as we know from my last past on him... he's really annoying, talks way too much, thinks too much of himself and is generally very annoying.

This was a short post but like all Tarantino films... watch it and enjoy it!
Signing off!

My dearest Clarence (commonly known as Clare), what do you do if you get a child like Adam?...

The answer if i'm not mistaken is "shove it back up and ask for a refund", which is possibly a very sensible idea... unless you want a queen of not only drag but also drama eating away at your life. What am i watching you may ask? But then you already know the answer... or do you. Gilmore Girls was your first guess, and as a staple in my life you will always strike gold with that, but i can't deny that there comes a time when you have say "Oi with the poodles already!" and look for something else to watch for a while. Not that Gilmore Girls isn't great, there's no deny that it's completely ridiculous but yet great none the less. It's the kind of ultimate insanity that most of us hate to admit we kind of secretly wish actually exists. If you haven't watched it, you should. Take my word on it, you can hate me for it later, but just go with it for now and it may even be worth your while. (I'm not talking to you Clare i know that you've been subject to a fair amount of the epic madness... maybe not quite enough, but we're getting there. But to all of the rest of you... if there's anyone else out there, lurking in the abyss, i'm talking to you.)

So i may be just a tiny bit behind the rest of the universe, but twas only just the other day that i finally felt the urge to jump down the street 21 times, and horror of all horrors, calamity of all calamities... it wasn't bad. Beyond that it was pretty epic. I must admit that it is kind of satisfying to watch a film where the Jonah Hill of the world gets to show up the Channing Tatum. Finally there's  some inkling of a balance (small though it may be), for one high school isn't just the popular jock kids getting the girls and making everyone else life hell. And on top of that the so called "jock" stereotype played oh so well by Mr Tatum manages to actually get his head round the actual knowing of things... dun dun duuuuuun! The appearance of Johnny Depp was a slight confuzdication until i engaged brain (Johnny Depp = old 21 Jump Street... bringing him in connects the predecessor to the successor - e.g. new 21 Jump Street.) All in all it was a pretty epic film and i must admit i am kind of looking forward to the arrival of 22 Jump Street. Sad times that young Neil died after only five minutes of glory but i guess it was all for the greater good of the film. The amount that they say "Infiltrate the suppliers, find the source." was some what reminiscent of fight club... what's the first rule of fight club Clare?

Other than that the only news that i have to give is that i still don't think Stannis Baratheon is the one true King of Westeros. (Game of Thrones for those who don't know) I've been busy catching up on season three and i am pleased to inform you that i am now fully qualified to move on to season four. There's not much to say on that front without things getting convoluted and confusing, especially considering that to the best of my knowledge you do not partake in the Game of Thrones craze so trying to explain would be fruitless and probably very painful (for either me or you, i'm not sure... maybe both?) but probably not as painful as being flayed... however that is an entirely different conversation. So let me just say this; Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) is by far the best character, it's sooo true that height isn't everything cos he kicks ass despite only cumming up to most peoples waist and maybe not even that. Tywin is annoying but you have to admit he knows how to play the game, plus it's proven impossible to actually hate Charles Dance. But in general i think i'm gonna stick with voting for Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) cos lets face it, she has dragons... and she's a woman (i feel like i'm long overdue for some feminist stuff... does that count?)

So there we have it ladies and gentlemen, Clare and Clarence... updates complete.

Over and out.

The Nun's Story

I read or am at least led to believe that this is being made/has been made into a stage production?
It's quite a different Audrey Hepburn film from the typical Breakfast at Tiffany's.

A young girl wants to become a nun and this film shows all the work that they do in the convent and what happens to her after she becomes a nun.

Her father has a career in medicine and naturally she is also very good at it. She gets sent out to help a doctor and typically ends up falling in love with him.
She develops consumption and is sent home to rest and recover. She decides to leave the convent.

I liked it a lot. If you're into the sound of music or religious like films then its easy enough to watch.

I know these posts are short and the next one- The texas chainsaw massacre will probably be just as short cos i don't really like horror films, but Saving Mr Banks which follows texas will be a longer one.

Goodfellas

Another Gangster film but with Robert Di Niro. There's not much I can say about it- it's a really good film but typical of gangster films. A young guy decides he wants to become a gangster and starts working as a runner for one of the main guys in the neighbourhood. He gets arrested at some age like 16, says nothing and that is his initiation into the gang. He becomes a proper member and runs his own ops in drugs. He gets arrested multiple times and his drugs seized many times and ends up penniless and in a general state of disaster, addicted to narcotics. It is based on a true story and it is a great film.

Ryan

Saving Private Ryan...
An ok film but kinda boring. This guy called Ryan (Matt Damon) has a load of brothers who are K.I.A. The president decides that it's time to return James Francis Ryan to his mother and take him away from the Germans. He sends a unit to go and find him, the captain of that unit is Tom Hanks.
Eventually they find this guy and he refuses to leave until the task of holding the bridge is complete. The captain dies in the battle and Ryan returns home.
It's a short post but the film was very army ish and very predictable. I'm not saying that it wasn't good, it was just easy to listen to it and do something else with it on in the background.

Esther what did you think about Cannibals?

So this may seem a bit weird but to get Esther involved again, we're going to post to each other about what we're watching.
Est- i watched the texas chainsaw massacre... original. I can't blame you for this one cos i added it on to the list. I was really getting into it, until the cannibals came along. I thought the guy that burnt things and cut people with razors was weird but not seriously disturbing.
I didn't want to eat while watching the film though... not like silence of the lambs, i was eating all the way through that. The cannibal scenes looked like someone had dropped loads of rice pudding everywhere (which is about the only thing you can do with it)!

Post me back with whatever you're watching... probably gilmore girls and i'll hit you back with saving mr. banks

The Shawshank Redemption

Is a great film. I say many times that I've never not liked Morgan Freeman in a film. Once again I loved him in it.
He's in prison for murdering someone and got a life sentence. He's the go to man about everything and is the narrator of the story.

This film is basically the story of how a banker is falsely accused and imprisoned for murdering his wife and wife's lover. He spends his time doing all the accounts, fabricating accounts etc so that he gains favour with the prison guard and prison rector. He spends time digging a way out of the prison, through sewers and other unpleasant things until one day he actually escapes and unleashes all the fabricated documents to the press causing there to be a serious change in personnel in the prison, leading to the death of the prison rector.
The prison rector was just convinced from start to finish that no one was ever getting out of his prison and in fact, when they had served 40 years or however long and were finally allowed out, they killed themselves generally speaking because everything had changed. They had no status and had to work in a store packing bags.
Morgan Freeman gets released and goes to find his friend, who has managed to create a whole new identity and walks into a bank on the day he escaped to close down all his accounts and leave the state with all the money. He leaves a package for Morgan Freeman and off they go on a new adventure.

Funny Girl/ Funny Lady

No surprise that since Glee has hyped this musical up to be so amazing I thought i'd watch it and as I was watching Funny Girl, i thought i'd watch the sequel as well.

It's easy to watch and quite entertaining, but between the two films, it only has 'Don't Rain On My Parade' that's a show stopping tune you walk around singing.
I felt that the first film, Funny Girl- the tale of a young Jewish girl trying to make her way on broadway by performing in choruses and making people laugh by constantly getting her words and dance steps wrong.
Eventually she becomes the main girl in all her stage shows and becomes noticed as Fanny Brice. She falls in love with a Gambler; Nick (can't spell the last name).
Eventually they get married and all things are going well, until Nick starts losing all the time at cards, gets caught up in the wrong business and gets arrested. After his arrest he divorces Fanny.

The second film, Fanny gets re-married to some songwriter guy and eventually they get divorced as well. Nick marries some other woman and thats about all that really happens.
There are no memorable songs and when you think that Rachel Berry from Glee is based on Fanny Brice, you can see why she is so irritating.

I'll give it to Barbara, she's got a great voice and can really act... it's just that her character is too irritating for a second film that doesn't have a single memorable song in it. When i say memorable, I mean the type of song that you would walk around singing, a song you would know without having seen the musical.
