Another war film. Brad Pitt seems to make a lot of these films. World War Z is on the list but I haven't got that far yet. Inglorious Bastards is the film that I am thinking of when I say that he is making ANOTHER war film. This is a more serious film so I will not spend the entire blog comparing it with Inglorious Bastards.
This film is harder to write about. Brad Pitt takes the lead as the commanding officer but unfortunately for him, he doesn't really pull off the military hair. This film isn't really about Brad Pitt. Even though he is the star and the commander there is more to focus on with the likes of Logan Lerman trying to really kickstart his career after the hurdle of Percy Jackson 2. Lerman pulls off being a young officer, Pitt looks like he is 50- it is showing in the face and for a team like this it doesn't quite seem to fit. You can see the anger building up in Logan Lerman's eyes but the way he plays the character is mostly calm, calmer than you would imagine for the youngest officer on the team- a surprising choice from him but one that payed off.
Emotional scene from Lerman was very well done. More impressive than I have seen from him. Film choice is what is holding Lerman back. A better selection of roles to take and leave would have made his career better. You don't want to be held back by making the wrong choices and therefore making bad movies and having people think that you can't act. He can, this film proves it, now he just needs to make the right choices and keep picking films that challenge him, whilst turning down the bad movies.
Welcome back to Shia LeBouf. Nice to see him in something where he wasn't a sweaty, angsty teenager. Very much a supporting role and very much a position that does him a lot more justice than being the lead. If this guy had made his name as a supporting actor his career would not have gone down the drain after Transformers 1. His role was calm and that is something that we needed to see from him. Something different from how he destroyed his career. Good to see.
Back to Brad Pitt. Was he a good leader? He was calm and authoritative and this at times was noticed but as a leader every decision you make will be questioned at some point by someone. I questioned his decisions in the scene when they are being attacked by a German tank which just seems to be tank-proof. Whatever they are firing is having no effect and so they are just moving targets that can't move fast enough to properly escape. I would have spent my time moving away from danger instead of moving towards something that I couldn't hit but maybe that is just me. In that position I can't help but feel that you need to stop swearing and think about it properly.
