So while you were watching Channing Tatum grow up... I went back a few decades to Jackie Brown.
A Tarantino film as always... meaning lots of shooting and Samuel L Jackson. Correct me if i'm wrong but I think he has been in every Tarantino film except for Kill Bill 1 and 2?
I wonder what you would do if you had to deal with a really annoying blonde that is absolutely useless?
I'm not saying that we should adopt the Tarantino method of shoot first and ask questions later, but she was completely useless and fairly annoying. Infact, why Samuel L Jackson would even keep her around is way beyond me. I've been sitting here, watching it, for two and a half hours and like all Tarantino films the plot is easy to remember. Air hostess gets caught smuggling money and a small amount of cocaine and suddenly has to play against the cops and her boss who would rather kill her than look at her.
The answer is, keep screwing over the boss to keep the police happy and then in the end, screw them both over and make off with a million dollars. She does have a bit of help, but most of the trickery and schemes are down to her.
Chris Tucker gets shot early on by Samuel L Jackson, which is a massive bonus because as we know from my last past on him... he's really annoying, talks way too much, thinks too much of himself and is generally very annoying.
This was a short post but like all Tarantino films... watch it and enjoy it!

My dearest Clarence (commonly known as Clare), what do you do if you get a child like Adam?...
The answer if i'm not mistaken is "shove it back up and ask for a refund", which is possibly a very sensible idea... unless you want a queen of not only drag but also drama eating away at your life. What am i watching you may ask? But then you already know the answer... or do you. Gilmore Girls was your first guess, and as a staple in my life you will always strike gold with that, but i can't deny that there comes a time when you have say "Oi with the poodles already!" and look for something else to watch for a while. Not that Gilmore Girls isn't great, there's no deny that it's completely ridiculous but yet great none the less. It's the kind of ultimate insanity that most of us hate to admit we kind of secretly wish actually exists. If you haven't watched it, you should. Take my word on it, you can hate me for it later, but just go with it for now and it may even be worth your while. (I'm not talking to you Clare i know that you've been subject to a fair amount of the epic madness... maybe not quite enough, but we're getting there. But to all of the rest of you... if there's anyone else out there, lurking in the abyss, i'm talking to you.)
So i may be just a tiny bit behind the rest of the universe, but twas only just the other day that i finally felt the urge to jump down the street 21 times, and horror of all horrors, calamity of all calamities... it wasn't bad. Beyond that it was pretty epic. I must admit that it is kind of satisfying to watch a film where the Jonah Hill of the world gets to show up the Channing Tatum. Finally there's some inkling of a balance (small though it may be), for one high school isn't just the popular jock kids getting the girls and making everyone else life hell. And on top of that the so called "jock" stereotype played oh so well by Mr Tatum manages to actually get his head round the actual knowing of things... dun dun duuuuuun! The appearance of Johnny Depp was a slight confuzdication until i engaged brain (Johnny Depp = old 21 Jump Street... bringing him in connects the predecessor to the successor - e.g. new 21 Jump Street.) All in all it was a pretty epic film and i must admit i am kind of looking forward to the arrival of 22 Jump Street. Sad times that young Neil died after only five minutes of glory but i guess it was all for the greater good of the film. The amount that they say "Infiltrate the suppliers, find the source." was some what reminiscent of fight club... what's the first rule of fight club Clare?
Other than that the only news that i have to give is that i still don't think Stannis Baratheon is the one true King of Westeros. (Game of Thrones for those who don't know) I've been busy catching up on season three and i am pleased to inform you that i am now fully qualified to move on to season four. There's not much to say on that front without things getting convoluted and confusing, especially considering that to the best of my knowledge you do not partake in the Game of Thrones craze so trying to explain would be fruitless and probably very painful (for either me or you, i'm not sure... maybe both?) but probably not as painful as being flayed... however that is an entirely different conversation. So let me just say this; Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) is by far the best character, it's sooo true that height isn't everything cos he kicks ass despite only cumming up to most peoples waist and maybe not even that. Tywin is annoying but you have to admit he knows how to play the game, plus it's proven impossible to actually hate Charles Dance. But in general i think i'm gonna stick with voting for Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) cos lets face it, she has dragons... and she's a woman (i feel like i'm long overdue for some feminist stuff... does that count?)
So there we have it ladies and gentlemen, Clare and Clarence... updates complete.
Over and out.

The Nun's Story
It's quite a different Audrey Hepburn film from the typical Breakfast at Tiffany's.
A young girl wants to become a nun and this film shows all the work that they do in the convent and what happens to her after she becomes a nun.
Her father has a career in medicine and naturally she is also very good at it. She gets sent out to help a doctor and typically ends up falling in love with him.
She develops consumption and is sent home to rest and recover. She decides to leave the convent.
I liked it a lot. If you're into the sound of music or religious like films then its easy enough to watch.
I know these posts are short and the next one- The texas chainsaw massacre will probably be just as short cos i don't really like horror films, but Saving Mr Banks which follows texas will be a longer one.

Ryan
An ok film but kinda boring. This guy called Ryan (Matt Damon) has a load of brothers who are K.I.A. The president decides that it's time to return James Francis Ryan to his mother and take him away from the Germans. He sends a unit to go and find him, the captain of that unit is Tom Hanks.
Eventually they find this guy and he refuses to leave until the task of holding the bridge is complete. The captain dies in the battle and Ryan returns home.
It's a short post but the film was very army ish and very predictable. I'm not saying that it wasn't good, it was just easy to listen to it and do something else with it on in the background.
Esther what did you think about Cannibals?
So this may seem a bit weird but to get Esther involved again, we're going to post to each other about what we're watching.
Est- i watched the texas chainsaw massacre... original. I can't blame you for this one cos i added it on to the list. I was really getting into it, until the cannibals came along. I thought the guy that burnt things and cut people with razors was weird but not seriously disturbing.
I didn't want to eat while watching the film though... not like silence of the lambs, i was eating all the way through that. The cannibal scenes looked like someone had dropped loads of rice pudding everywhere (which is about the only thing you can do with it)!
Post me back with whatever you're watching... probably gilmore girls and i'll hit you back with saving mr. banks

The Shawshank Redemption
Is a great film. I say many times that I've never not liked Morgan Freeman in a film. Once again I loved him in it.
He's in prison for murdering someone and got a life sentence. He's the go to man about everything and is the narrator of the story.
This film is basically the story of how a banker is falsely accused and imprisoned for murdering his wife and wife's lover. He spends his time doing all the accounts, fabricating accounts etc so that he gains favour with the prison guard and prison rector. He spends time digging a way out of the prison, through sewers and other unpleasant things until one day he actually escapes and unleashes all the fabricated documents to the press causing there to be a serious change in personnel in the prison, leading to the death of the prison rector.
The prison rector was just convinced from start to finish that no one was ever getting out of his prison and in fact, when they had served 40 years or however long and were finally allowed out, they killed themselves generally speaking because everything had changed. They had no status and had to work in a store packing bags.
Morgan Freeman gets released and goes to find his friend, who has managed to create a whole new identity and walks into a bank on the day he escaped to close down all his accounts and leave the state with all the money. He leaves a package for Morgan Freeman and off they go on a new adventure.

Funny Girl/ Funny Lady
No surprise that since Glee has hyped this musical up to be so amazing I thought i'd watch it and as I was watching Funny Girl, i thought i'd watch the sequel as well.
It's easy to watch and quite entertaining, but between the two films, it only has 'Don't Rain On My Parade' that's a show stopping tune you walk around singing.
I felt that the first film, Funny Girl- the tale of a young Jewish girl trying to make her way on broadway by performing in choruses and making people laugh by constantly getting her words and dance steps wrong.
Eventually she becomes the main girl in all her stage shows and becomes noticed as Fanny Brice. She falls in love with a Gambler; Nick (can't spell the last name).
Eventually they get married and all things are going well, until Nick starts losing all the time at cards, gets caught up in the wrong business and gets arrested. After his arrest he divorces Fanny.
The second film, Fanny gets re-married to some songwriter guy and eventually they get divorced as well. Nick marries some other woman and thats about all that really happens.
There are no memorable songs and when you think that Rachel Berry from Glee is based on Fanny Brice, you can see why she is so irritating.
I'll give it to Barbara, she's got a great voice and can really act... it's just that her character is too irritating for a second film that doesn't have a single memorable song in it. When i say memorable, I mean the type of song that you would walk around singing, a song you would know without having seen the musical.

Who is this man Gatsby?
I'm told that this is a very good book. I haven't read it yet.
I liked the plot a lot- who is gatsby? Gatsby turns out to be some nobody that made his fortune in scams and other illegal ways. Talks like a gentleman and has connections everywhere. What makes Gatsby so great is his imagination (it's also his downfall). He mixes with the right people, throws great parties but does it all for the love of one woman whom he was in love with before he went off to war. When he got back she was married.
The film is Aesthetically pleasing. It's not over complicated, it just does enough to make it simple and interesting.
It's taken me time to like Leonardo Di Caprio. I didn't like Titanic and judged him on that... big mistake. What's eating Gilbert Grape? is another film that he's fantastic in. Django Unchained is another great and recent-ish film that he's starred in and been amazing in. This is no exception. I was amazed by how good he was as Gatsby and most importantly how well he managed to hold his upper class english accent.
I was also very impressed with Tobey Maguire, whom we all know for being spider-man in those three fairly rubbish films. He played his character very well, passively but with the right amount of sincerity.
It's definitely a film to buy and watch over again.

Before Take the lead
There's a lot to say about this film... but most of it's not good.
So many films about dancing, and so many with the same theme. All old musicals have this kinda idea about them. Fred Astaire was constantly trying to mix up tap dancing will ballet and ballroom dancing. The idea about mixing together different styles of music isn't new. Why Baz Luhrmann who as we know is capable of making very good films (Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet) had to make this film is beyond me.
Synopsis
A ballroom dancer in Australia wants to try and fuse the ballroom steps with other styles of dancing and of course it is a massive scandal. No one would ever allow modern dancing to interfere with the art of ballroom dancing. Unfortunately he knows nothing about rhythm and the reason why his mixture of dancing is a mess is because he's out of time. His dance partner refuses to dance with him because his dancing wont win competitions, which is what dancing is all about (apparently). He gets a new partner who's a beginner and also latino. Her family teach them about rhythm and ultimately make them better dancers. They go to the competition and dance their way, no matter how hard the judges try to make them stop.If you're into dancing films, then Take The Lead with Antonio Banderas is a much better film experimenting with the same thing. Incorporating street and hip hop dancing with ballroom dancing and they do it very effectively. They have a sense of rhythm and make it interesting which Baz fails to do.
I know that this was made before Take the Lead, but Take the lead is such a good film and strictly ballroom really isn't. You can buy it as part of a box set and to be fair, it's not as bad as Australia, Jumper or the Golden Compass... so it's not the worst deal in the world. Buying it in a box set is good cos you get moulin rouge and Romeo and Juliet which are actually worth paying for. I wouldn't recommend that you go out of your way to get hold of this film and watch it... it's not worth it. I've no idea why they made a musical of this film!

Drag queens in the desert
Possibly the weirdest film i've seen yet... although rocky horror picture show is a very close second!

Two drag queens and a transexual ride through the desert in Australia singing and dancing.
Mostly this film is about how long they spend stuck in the desert with a broken down van. They dress up and practice their dancing in the middle of the desert before finally reaching their destination and doing a show.
Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce are the drag queens. Guy Pearce plays the character that always goes too far. Doesn't know when to drop it and leave it alone, drinks to much and draws way to much attention to himself. He manages to get himself into quite a lot of trouble and picks fights with all the wrong people.
Hugo Weaving has a wife and son that he never told anyone about. His son decides that he's ok with his dad dressing up and dating other men, which makes everything ok and the show can go on.
It's a pretty humorous film and it's good to see actors broadening their horizons. Made in 1994, there's probably a reason as to why most people haven't seen this film. The idea of drag queens can be weird for some people. It's got great music and is very enjoyable, but it's not the best film ever made... but then I don't think anyone thought it would be.

You drink the Gin... and replace it with water.
If you're in for a life and are ok with drag queens, watch it, enjoy it... it'll change your life (i'm just not sure in which way). The Original Tron
This is the film that later films such as I robot were based on. Computer programmers are programming, unaware that the master programme is taking over.
When he gets into the master programme, the master programme becomes so fed up with him that Flynn is sucked into the master programme and becomes a character, part of the game. He is the only user to be part of the game and meets up with a programme, Tron. Tron is unbeatable. He also meets up with his programme and together they start to find ways around the system, trying their hardest to get to the master programme. Tron and Flynn eventually succeed and Flynn discovers his file and is also sent back to the human world.
I haven't yet seen the other Tron films but I know that they have kept Jeff Bridges and the main cast the same, which means that the films have a very good chance of being brilliant!
This film was made in 1982... you can tell, it has a kinda Pokemon/Zelda/Tetras feel about it, which is to be expected. It has a great storyline and is super easy to watch. It's not a film that takes much brainpower and we all have no doubt that Flynn and Tron will complete their mission.
If you lived with Tetras and Pokemon, you appreciate and understand the colour and the games shown in the film. Every task that they have to complete kinda resembles the most basic games. The colour scheme is like Pokemon and when they ride motorbikes and fight against the enemy, it reminded me of snake! Made in an era of great games, this film is great to bring back original gaming. I loved the film, I just wonder why it took them so long to make another one?

The Artist
A film that won a lot of awards.
Silent movies in colour is something you rarely watch, but this is a genius film. We're used to silent films, the kind that you see in Singing in the Rain or the original Phantom of the Opera, but to see a silent movie created in the 21st century is very uncommon.
Not many actors of the silent era made it to speaking... it's a completely different style of acting. This guy certainly doesn't! Unlike Singing in the rain, he can't make the change and starts to lose all his money. He ends up with no work and sets fire to his apartment. His dog (who is the best character (in my opinion)) gets a policeman to come and drag the artist out of his burning house and he is taken to hospital and then to the women's house. He holds on to the film he was originally in with this woman and she helps him recover.
It takes him a while but eventually he agrees to do another movie with her, a speaking movie and in doing so his career is re-born!
I can see why it won so many awards. Not only did it take the world by surprise, instead of moving forward with the groundbreaking technology that they used in Avatar, they have taken us back to original films, the kind you would associate with Fritz Lang!
Hitchcock
REAR WINDOW
(if anyone is a fan of the YU-GI-OH spoof of 'Bad Romance' you'll be singing it all the time you watch the film!)
Having only seen her in High Society, I was amazed to see her in a hitchcock film. I was also amazed to see a hitchcock film that didn't involve a shower and lots of dead bodies.
Not much happens in this film. A guy sits in a wheelchair at his window watching his neighbours and soon becomes aware that one of his neighbours has 'misplaced' his wife. Being a journalist, he refuses to dismiss the idea that the wife is just sick and hiding indoors.
Of course he turns out to be correct. Grace Kelly sneaks into the apartment and discovers the wife's wedding ring. She of course then gets arrested for breaking into someone else's house, but she takes the ring with her and so the man can't get back the proof that his wife is dead and not sick.
This film isn't as capturing as Psycho or other Hitchcock horror films, but its still watchable and quite enjoyable. You can't beat Hitchcock... he's still one of the best movie makers ever, along with the likes of Spielberg.
It's been a while since I watched the film... I think I watched it some time last month and have watched about ten films in between watching Rear Window and writing this post.
I know I've been slow with it all, I haven't really been around. I also apologise that all the posts are coming from me- Est hasn't really been watching the films and so hasn't posted.
The post on 'The Artist' is LONG overdue- It will be next. I'm scheduling it so that a new post should go up everyday.. to try and get back on track with all the posts.

Forget about it
Anyway complicated rant over... this is a great film! It's slightly typical in plot, F.B.I covert operation in to gangsters and in the end the agent becomes friends with the gangster but it's still a great film. I loved it from start to finish! Al Pacino is perfect in his role and Depp doesn't give anything away. He plays the part the way that you would expect but he pulls off the gangster personality much better than you would expect from a covert F.B.I agent. You were expecting him to give it away at some point and he never does.
Also if you're someone who doesn't understand the 'Forget About It' references, watch the film and then you will!

Rush Hour
Rush hour... where to start.
It turns into a very good film, but you have to get through Chris Tucker's constant talking before that. It's tempting from start until at least an hour in to just turn it off cos his constant talking is really irritating.
The story line is that a notorious drug guy in Hong Kong kidnaps the chinese consuls' daughter in America. The FBI are called in and the consul brings in his own P.I (Chan). To stop Chan raining on the parade of the FBI, they ask someone from La PD to be sent down to babysit him. Chris Tucker, who is due to be suspended because he went in alone on a mission and blew up all the evidence as well as allowing 2 policemen to be shot, is handed this task.
In typical Jackie Chan style there is a lot of marshal arts and he completes his mission successfully.
It's an o.k film, but its not the best film he's ever done.

You put the lotion on it's body
I've been afraid to watch this film for some time. Horror films aren't really my strong point- I hate them and find it difficult to eat after watching them.
I was helped by having seen a small part of the French and Saunders spoof, this made it easier to laugh when Jodie Foster walks silently through the prison to find Anthony Hopkins.
I think what makes it easier to watch than other horror movies is that it is out-dated. There isn't anything to Gory or mentally disturbing about it and also that Jodie Foster's accent is really annoying, so it's easier to lose concentration and not necessarily pay full attention to what is going on.
It's certainly a film to consider watching if you're not in to horror. A film that explains so much about psychopaths and serial killers, without over doing it. It's all about the portrayal of the character, not necessarily the drama in the killing.
I wont say that it's a must see film, but it is a good film nonetheless and a well made film at that.

Hercules comes to life
So this is a very young Maggie Smith with a lot of names that I don't recognise. For those that don't know anything about it, it's about the story of Perseus, the mortal son of Zeus and how he has to battle Calibos (who was deformed by Zeus for destroying his winged horses excluding Pegasus) to save the world.
He has to fight the cracken, which he does and become a hero, which he also does.
It's not as exciting as 300 or Troy, but still easy to watch. Because it's so old, any sort of blood is clearly paint. It's well written and it's not a bad film, but it's certainly a dated film and not essential to your life. I enjoyed it and could easily watch it again.
I'm going to upload our film list, so that you can see which posts I have done and which posts should've been done and haven't.

Fritz Lang
The only Fritz Lang film i had seen prior to this was 'The Secret Behind The Door' which is based on the tale of Bluebeard. Apart from that, my silent movie list extended to include 'The Phantom Of The Opera'.
What I like about Silent Movies, is that they're totally easy to watch. You watch the screen and listen to great orchestral score that is playing along wondering what the hell is going on and by the end of the film you've managed to just about suss it out with thanks to the captions that occasionally pop up. You can try and lip read and come to the conclusion that what the captions often say is a broad generalisation of what is actually being said.
So because it was made in 1927 i'm going to assume that a lot of people haven't read it and just give a summary of what the 2 hour long film is about.
In short: All these workers build machines. They work for a man and they build a city. The man has a son, who after watching his father dismiss one of the workers decides to swap places with one of the workers. The son, as a worker, learns about Babel and the other religious parallels from various books of the bible such as revelations and apocalypse. They go to a meeting with a woman who tells them that there has to be a mediator between head and hands and that is the heart. They need someone to guide them. She falls in love with the son. The father doesn't like the idea of his workers following this woman and goes to an inventor for help.
The inventor was previously married / in love with a woman whom is now dead. The woman had a son with the father and thus the son was born. The inventor has created something called the metal man and he takes the face of the woman and puts it on the face of the metal man. He uses the metal man to lead the workers in the destruction of the city and ultimately the destruction of the father and son.
Needless to say that although the city is destroyed, the son overpowers the inventor and he and his father and the woman live, whilst the metal woman is burnt at the stake because the workers think that she is a witch.
