I'm a fan of Chow Yun-Fat. I loved him in Bulletproof Monk and also in Pirates of the Caribbean. Needless to say that I loved him in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
I have to admit that I thought all the flying scenes were a little trippy and slightly unrealistic but nonetheless I liked it a lot.
plot from IMDB:
Li Mu Bai, a great warrior decides to turn in his sword, the Green Destiny to a treasured friend. When the sword is then stolen, it is up to him to retrieve it. At the same time he is trying to avenge his master's death by the evil Jade Fox. He is joined in his quest by Shu Lien, the un-conceded love of his life. During all of this, they are introduced to Jiao Long Yu, the mysterious and beautiful daughter of a well known family. She is the mysterious link to all these tales. But through all the many subplots, this is in essence, a love story.
She is the daughter of the Governor and quite an interesting character as the plot develops. This isn't just a martial arts film, as said in the synopsis it is a love story.
I loved the scenery and the simplicity in it. Sometimes films get too carried away by either the many subplots or the martial arts and forget the rest of the story. If we just wanted to watch great martial arts we'd sit down and have a Bruce Lee marathon.
The scenery is really great as well. Showing all about China and it's beautiful scenery.
Made in 2000, a film that looks like it didn't have a massive budget and still managed to produce a fairly awesome film from it. Sometimes simplicity is the best, film in a location that shows beauty and only use the typical things associated with that culture. No helicopter chases or boat chases, nothing that really suggests that an unbelievable amount of money was spent on this film.
