The return of Tom Cruise with a gun. He is ageing nicely, still keeping his shape and physique but allowing the grey hairs to come through which is always a good sign.
Collateral is an easy to follow action film. The movie starts in a cab with a young woman (Jada Pinkett Smith) on the phone and the taxi driver (Jamie Foxx) trying hard to concentrate on the road. One man, 5 hits to make, trying to avoiding being caught by the police (Mark Ruffalo) and the last one lets him down.
Jamie Foxx is actually possibly at his best. Maybe Ray was his best different performance but this has got to be close because it wasn't until I opened up IMDB to make sure that I was spelling all the names correctly that I saw his name and realised who it was. When you can watch a film and not realise the actor playing the character then they are doing a super job. Tom Cruise was always going to be Tom Cruise- he looked exactly like he always has done and didn't do much to change anything about him that makes him Tom Cruise but he's reached the point where he has probably done as many different roles as he can and now we just have to expect the same kind of thing from him.
How many times can you almost die and keep going, keep driving, keep stopping for the man to kill a few other people, get shot at a lot, get arrested a few times only for you to escape, crash the cab, run in to save the woman's life- it's a hard life being a cab driver and that is no normal evening in LA. He was the biggest part, even though Tom Cruise was used to sell the film it was Jamie Foxx who was in almost every scene so it seems only fair that we spend a lot of time on him. The question is, if you were offered $700 for a night of driving the cab around with the same passenger would you take it?
Jada Pinkett Smith was also a solid performer in her role. Her role didn't really come alive until the end of the film but that is the way that the film was written and if I were to say anymore then I might spoil the film for someone that is reading this review before choosing to watch the film but what they don't realise is by reading this post up to now they have already convinced themselves that they want to watch the film but nonetheless I will not spoil the plot. Watch it and find out for yourself, it's a good and enjoyable film.
A word on Mr. Ruffalo- I can see where he got his character in Now You See Me from. The hair is different and his character was small but there was no doubt that it was him and certain traits were there to link him to Now You See Me.
