Pick a year to release an independent film and you chose the same year as 'The Martian', 'Mad Max', 'The Revenant' and 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. What do all these films have in common? The answer is that they all made a lot of money are were backed by the world to win academy awards. Between them they one a lot of awards but Ex Machina took the academy awards for Best Visual Effects, beating Star Wars, something that no one believed to be possible. Alicia Vikander was nominated for almost every award out there and that says a lot about someone in an independent name who's name isn't well known.
Domhall Gleeson was the well known name in this film and the cast for this film is really small. Three machines and two people makes a cast of five all in and that is how to keep the film costs down. His performance matched that of Alicia Vikander- controlling emotion and displaying it through the face and eyes more than in the voice. Every performance was believable and parts of it were really emotional but that is what you get from the man who had a hand in 28 days later and a few other thrillers of that kind of nature. This film is one that you shouldn't miss, don't put it on whilst doing something else, don't leave it playing whilst you leave the room to do something else, don't miss any of it because you will have missed something special. One of the best Sci-Fi films created to date, the bar is now set for films being produced, this is what you have to beat and I am not entirely convinced that anything being released within the next five years will be able to beat this film. It's not about the setting, which is simple, it's not about the money, it's about the performance from the entire cast, it's about what isn't said and that makes this film special.
I recommend this film to anyone that hasn't already seen it.
