Even though this is the sequel to the film that starred Daniel Radcliffe and Ciaran Hinds it is better to think of this as an independent film based on the story of the fantastic stage play that a lot of people have seen instead of thinking of this film as a follow on from the film made in 2012.
I didn't recognise any of the cast, which is nice because it means that I can give them all equal praise. I can praise the film in general because the end of the first film left it clear that the problem at the house had not been solved, running away did not end the story. This film is the explanation that every films needs as to why the house is haunted, who it is and how to solve the problem. I did like that it wasn't explained in the first film, the first film was just a film about a lawyer in a house that had been haunted and how he couldn't escape from it all.
Phoebe Fox after making this film went on to be a part of Alan Rickman's last film 'Eye In The Sky'. From seeing this film I can completely understand why she was a part of that film, a chance to be in a film with Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman is not something that anyone should turn down but it wasn't just by chance, she earned her opportunity by pulling off a stunning performance in this film. Jeremy Irvine is a name that I should have known from 'War Horse' and 'The Railway Man' but I just haven't quite got used to recognising his face. As the leading man he was strong. It is time for him to stop being supporting roles in a minority and time for him to start being the selling name.
Remember that this film is a thriller, it is supposed to be scary and would probably be a lot more scary if I had seen it in cinema when the sound would have been turned up a lot louder and everything appears to be darker and generally more scary.
Helen McCrory (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Hugo, Skyfall) was probably the biggest name in the cast and she didn't disappoint- she doesn't ever disappoint. This is a completely different film with the only thing in common being the house and the woman in black. Clear your mind of the first film and watch this film with an open mind.
