Another Mission Impossible film. Number 4 welcomed to the blog this year and the first one that is different to the norm. No masks and no obvious muck ups, in some ways it almost didn't feel like a Mission Impossible film. Then you have to look at what it is that makes Mission Impossible films MI films- it's the stupid excuse given on the news for the big crash and damage done that threaten people's lives, it's the ridiculously long fight scenes, the stunts that almost come off but end up being so ridiculous that they just wouldn't work in the end.
The addition of Simon Pegg was lovely. Jeremy Renner (Avengers Assemble) joined him, nice to see him trying to be an analyst with so much field experience that he can hold his own against Tom Cruise. Lea Seydoux (Blue is the Warmest Colour, Casino Royale, The Grand Budapest Hotel) has really come along since staring in 'Blue Is The Warmest Colour'. That film will always bring controversey because of it's nature and will probably end up being the film that she tries to forget about and does not want to be associated with. Lea Seydoux can act, she was fantastic in this film, she gave Paula Patton a run for her money before the latter kicked her out of the window. The female characters are much stronger in this film and didn't leave it all to Jeremy Renner and Tom Cruise.
Somewhere along the line we have to just accept that they are going to try and do something crazily stupid and that we just have to embrace it. Climbing up the outside of a building using some kind of robotic equipment to make it easier to climb is something stupid, especially as you know that something is going to happen and the equipment malfunctions. I'm not sure that any real spy would try attempting that kind of stunt and something that this series has managed to consistently. We've gotta love it because every film needs that ridiculous moment. What we are struggling to understand is why they keep making more of these films that effectively have the same story line and the same elements. I guess they would ask me why I keep watching them and I guess that I keep watching them in hope that the next one may be so much better and may actually be worth considering as a serious film. I don't want to stop hoping that one day I will write a post raving about how good the new Mission Impossible (74th film) was and why everyone should go and see it.
Who knows- maybe next time??
