No adverts appearing in London for this film just a few posters on the sides of buses but even then there weren't many posters displayed.
Emma Roberts has returned from her period of TV acting after making her film debut in the chickflick 'Wild Child'. The Niece of Julia Roberts came under scrutiny in that film with people claiming that she only got the part because of her connections in the film world. Like it or not with Wild Child she can act and her performance was good. You don't have to like anything that she has done until this point but opposite Dave Franco in 'Nerve' she was fantastic.
'Nerve' is all about a game. Venus (Emma Roberts) does not initially sign up to play the game, she thinks about singing up as a watcher to watch her friend Sydney but after Sydney says a few things that she shouldn't and basically tells her to take control of her life she signs up for the game. It's simple- complete dares to earn money. She meets Dave Franco (Ian) on a dare, the watchers want them to pair up and off they go on a night full of dares which sees her earn a ridiculous amount of money very quickly. The only problem is that once she decides to bail on the game by going to the police and becoming a snitcher she becomes a prisoner of the game. It is only with the assistance of her hacker friend and Sydney that they can team up to take down the game in the finals.
Trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together before the film actually does it for you is very difficult. It's not that you haven't been given all the clues it's just that it moves faster than you could have expected. 'Nerve' in many ways has a 'Gossip Girl' feel to it with the idea in the end being to take down 'Nerve', to stop it from being anonymous and to stop it from running for another year. If you bailed on the game you would lose all the money you and your family ever had, it had access to everything that you had ever put on line so you became a prisoner of it. It was all done by anonymous profiles and every new watcher became another anonymous server, it was cleverly done until a team of hackers get together and take it down.
What this film helps you to see is how in humane people can become when they are playing a game. They are prepared to dare people to lie on the train tracks, underneath a moving train, to hang off of scaffolding at the top of a massive building and the worst one- shoot each other. It's startling, it's worrying and it's worrying because it is true. Games make people do crazy things. If you are a gamer then watch this film and have your eyes opened.
