Sicario

I said not another war so I went for a drug related film. Another Layer Cake/Man on Fire/ thriller type film about the FBI taking down a drug ring leader and a lot of mixed alliances and double agents.

Sicario features Emily Blunt. Emily Blunt is fantastic in anything that she does. As an FBI agent she is convincing, compassionate and animated but also focused at all times on the task at hand. Throughout the film she is used by other members of her team and her life is in danger more than once but she's a tough kid, she can handle herself, she just can't always handle the size of the opponent. Likewise , Victor Garber is a fantastic choice as the man with the power sitting behind a desk trying to avoid doing anything noteworthy.

Benicio Del Toro (Snatch, The Usual Suspects) always looked like the enemy. Without trying to be to stereotypical or judgemental, his character always looked like the guy that was only in it for himself. In this film it is hard to know who your friends and enemies are and what Sicario shows you is that at times, when you are playing everything by the book you end up without any friends and only a lot of enemies- you're not always part of a team and you don't always win but you should stick to your principles and morals- never let go of them.

Two thumbs way up for Emily Blunt. She stole the show without having to try too hard. The character is a simple and yet complex one at the same time and all that she did was bring her own qualities to it and bring the character to life. As a woman she is strong and at the same time weak which is a contrast that most of us would definitely struggle to bring out of a character for the screen on demand. Sicario didn't storm the world and gain so much hype that everyone had to go and see it, it slipped by, noticed but at the same time not drawing in the massive crowds and that is a slight shame just because of the quality of acting. It's not for everyone but it is worth watching just for Emily Blunt.
