The Man Who Knew Too Much

Hitchcock!!!!

I am not particularly knowledgeable on Hitchcock so when a chance to watch a new Hitchcock film is presented we take it with open arms.

The Man Who Knew Too Much, just a film about a man who stumbles upon a plot to assassinate a diplomat and so his daughter is taken. Like all Hitchcock films the villain looks like a villain, a light accent and a nice scar on his forehead, he could have been a bond villain and we would never have known! Black and White so it makes skin colour and orientation a lot harder to tell but even so, you didn't really need it.

You know what to expect from these films, suspense and a relatively simple plot (excluding Psycho). I've said before on this blog that I actually love watching Black and White films because we get to see what real acting is. Acting without the colour and effects that we can do now, pure acting based on your own ability to convey a character and expression without any help from anyone else. The Villain stole the show in that department. Peter Lorre was the standout performer as the assassin and a pleasure to watch. This film was remade by Hitchcock twenty years later in Hollywood and I hope to be able to find the remake of it next year on the blog and watch it as I just can't see where I will find the time to watch it this year on the blog.

Enjoy these films, they are the true art and foundations for the world of film that we now have. Without these guys and these types of films we would have nothing and we have to be appreciative of them. No point trying to criticise them based on what we see now, we have to try and imagine what we were doing in the thirties or even before (I wasn't born) and imagine sitting down to watch this film in the evening with our families and friends and just try to see how we would have responded to it on first viewing when it was released in cinemas.
